Potato gratin with cheese

This is the recipe for gratin Dauphinois with the addition of grated cheese. And this is the recipe that my family prefers. 

Cooking takes quite a while. So start your gratin and finish the rest of the meal while in the oven.

  • 0.5 kg potatoes
  • 200 ml cream
  • 200 g grated cheese (preferably Gruyère or Emmentaler)
  • 1 clove garlic
  • nutmeg
  • salt & pepper



  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into thin slices
  2. Rub the oven dish with the garlic clove
  3. Put the potato slices on the bottom of the oven dish, alternate with a layer of cheese, salt & pepper and nutmeg

  4. Fully cover with cream


  1. Cover the oven dish with aluminum foil

  2. Cook at 160 °C for about 1h

  3. Check the potato's by sticking a knife in them

  4. When the potatoes are cooked, remove the aluminum foil and bake to obtain a beautiful gratin layer
