Sugar bread

Sugar bread is eaten at a typical breakfast on Sunday morning in Belgium, dipped in hot chocolate. 

Do not put the pearl sugar in the bread machine: pearl sugar can damage the nonstick coating.

  • 320 g white flour for bread
  • 150 ml tepid water
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 20 g fresh yeast or 10 g of dry yeast
  • 125 g butter
  • 20 g granulated sugar
  • 4 g salt
  • 100 g pearl sugar


  1. put all the ingredients in the bread machine, except the pearl sugar
  2. start the dough program

  3. when the program has finished, remove the dough from the bread machine

  4. divide the dough into 1 large and 1 small ball

  5. add the pearl sugar to the large ball and knead to mix the pearl sugar into the dough

  6. roll the small ball of dough out to flatten it and wrap it around the large ball

  7. put the dough in a loaf pan (optional)

  8. care a few notches in the dough and sprinkle with pearl sugar

  9. allow the dough to rise for 2 hours in a dry place at room temperature

  10. bake for 30 min. in a preheated oven at 200 °C
